A Fabulous Burger Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

Main Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup textured vegetable protein (TVP)

  • 1 Cup chickpea

  • 1/4 Cup all purpose flour

  • 1/3 Cup aquafaba

  • 1/4 Cup beetroot juice

  • 1 Small tomato

  • 1 Cup water

  • 3 Leaves of romaine lettuce

  • 1/2 Small avocado

  • 3 Tablespoon cooking oil (canola, corn, or vegetable)

  • 1 Tablespoon nutritional yeast

  • 1 Pack vegan cheese

Spice Ingredients:

  • 1/2 Teaspoon ground cumin

  • 1/4 Teaspoon paprika

  • 1/4 Teaspoon ground chili powder

  • 1/4 Teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/4 Teaspoon onion powder

  • 1 Teaspoon cajun seasoning (season to taste)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Burger Preparation:

  1. Boil a cup of water in a pot.

  2. Add the TVP to the pot and allow it to simmer for about 10 minutes.

  3. Drain the TVP and set aside.

  4. Add the rehydrated TVP along with the chickpeas, aquafaba, and beetroot juice to food processor and mix until the ingredients are well combined.

  5. The beetroot juice will give the burger a nice red color.

  6. Transfer the Mixture to a large bowl and add in the spices.

  7. If the mixture is too soft, add the all purpose flour, a tablespoon at a time, until it is easy to form into patties.

  8. Carefully divide the mixture into 4-6 burger patties (depending upon the patty size you prefer)

  9. Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a skillet or grill.

  10. Place the burger patties on the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, making sure to flip them often (preferably every 2 minutes).

  11. You can use the remaining tablespoon of cooking oil at this time so that the patties won’t stick to the grill.

  12. Once each side has been cooked and flipped twice, you can add the vegan cheese to the top and cover the skillet or grill for about 1-2 minutes to allow the cheese to melt.

  13. You can, now, remove the patties from the skillet or grill and place them on your bun or bread of choice.

Burger Assembly:

  1. Clean the lettuce and tomato and cut into slices.

  2. Peal the avocado and cut into slices.

  3. The above two steps can be done in advance if you prefer.

  4. You can grill your bun for 45 seconds on the skillet for a nice toasty texture.

  5. Remove the buns from the grill and place the hot patties on the bun.

  6. Once the burger patties are on the bottom piece of bun, you can add your favorite condiments like ketchup, chili sauce, or even vegan BBQ sauce if you so please.

  7. Now, add the lettuce, tomato, avocado, and top it off with the top piece of bun. 

  8. Enjoy!

This burger can be served with baked potato wedges or, if you’re latin like me, you can have them with sweet plantains. I know, I know, weird, but don’t knock it until you’ve tried the combination. At any rate, it is totally up to you. Let me know how you like this recipe.
